June 24, 2019 – The organising committee of the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022 has issued a notice for reducing GHG emissions where possible and for offsetting unavoidable emissions to make the Olympics carbon neutral.
The notice outlines the plan to build-low carbon venues, provide low-carbon transport, and invest in renewable energy projects to supply the Winter Olympics with 100% renewable energy. Unavoidable emissions will be “neutralised” through offsets that invest in carbon forestry projects in the host cities Beijing and Zhangjiakou. Moreover, the notice encourages the private sector involved in the Olympics to offset their emissions thorugh purchases of either allowances from Beijing’s Emission Trading Scheme or credits from the Chinese Certified Emissions Reductions (CCER) offset system.
The notice follows the publication of China’s guidelines to organise (large-scale) carbon neutral events.
